Is the COMBI NSA approved for both paper and discs?
It is listed on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List, with an important qualifier: the entry reads "Kobra 400 HS-6 Combi – Manufactured in/after Nov, 2019". Units built before that date are not covered. Kobra also states the machine exceeds ASIO T-4 for optical media and is NPSA approved for UK government use. Confirm the current EPL revision and the specific unit's build date before you rely on the listing.
Why is the paper throat only 9.5 inches?
Because the optical media unit occupies part of the same cabinet width. The straight KOBRA 400 HS-6 AUTO-OILER uses the whole 23.5-inch cabinet for one paper head and gets a 16-inch throat; the COMBI splits it into a 9.5-inch paper opening and a 5-inch disc opening. US letter and legal fed short-edge first pass easily at 9.5 inches. Wide printouts do not.
Do paper and disc waste end up in the same bag?
No, and that is one of the main reasons to choose this model. Paper shreds fall into a 29-gallon (110 litre) plastic bag; optical media and card debris fall into a separate 22-gallon (80 litre) fabric bag. Fabric is used for the plastic stream because disc fragments are sharp and would cut through a standard liner. Separate bags also mean the two waste streams can follow different disposal procedures.
How many discs can it get through in an hour?
Kobra's European datasheet (rev. 10) states up to 2,100 discs per hour. Kobra's US page quotes a higher figure of 2,550, and the closely related 400 HS OM datasheet distinguishes a practical rate from a lower NSA-rated rate. For planning a destruction session, use 2,100 per hour and treat anything above it as headroom rather than as a commitment.
What is the sheet capacity?
Kobra's European datasheet states 8–10 sheets of A4 70 g/m², while the US page for the same machine states up to 14. The European figure is consistent with the rest of Kobra's high-security range and with the identical cutting head on the 400 HS-6, so plan around 8–10 sheets. A 0.8 x 5 mm particle is simply a lot of cutting work per sheet.
What does the metal detection system do?
Kobra fits a system it calls Shred Guard, which detects metal in the feed. On a machine with a 0.8 mm high-security head that is a practical protection rather than a marketing feature — a binder clip or a bulldog clip that would merely annoy a cross-cut shredder can damage a high-security cutting head. Staples in paper remain acceptable; larger metal fasteners should still be removed.
Can it handle SIM cards and CAC IDs?
Yes. Kobra lists CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs, EMV credit cards, magnetic stripe cards, CAC ID cards and SIM cards among the materials for the optical unit, and those same materials appear on the NSA/CSS EPL entry for the machine. They go through the 5-inch opening, not the paper throat.
