KOBRA 310 TS SS5

The KOBRA 310 TS SS5 is a touch-screen strip-cut shredder that slices paper into 5.8 mm (1/4 in nominal) strips at DIN 66399 P-2 and accepts up to 47 sheets per pass through a 13 in (330 mm) throat. It is the highest-capacity model in KOBRA's 310 Touch Screen line, built for print rooms, records clear-outs and departments that need to get rid of large amounts of non-sensitive paper quickly.

Where the SS5's 47-sheet rating comes from

KOBRA gets the extra capacity from the cut, not from a larger motor. Every model in the 310 TS family runs on the same 1.5 HP drive; the SS5 simply asks less of it per sheet because it makes fewer, wider cuts. The result is a feed rate of 20 ft/min and a stack size that keeps a queue moving during a purge. The carbon-hardened knives tolerate staples and paper clips, so files can go in without being stripped of fasteners first.

Because the motor carries a 24-hour continuous rating and no published duty cycle, there is no forced cool-down in the middle of a long session. The practical limit on a big job is the bag, not the machine.

Touch panel, load readout and the second cutting unit

Instead of rocker switches, forward, reverse and standby are chosen on a touch screen. Next to those controls, the Electronic Power Control (EPC) display shows in real time how hard the cutters are working, which helps staff learn how thick a stack the head will take before it needs to reverse. Holding forward for 5 seconds switches the sensors to a transparency setting so clear film is detected.

Discs and cards never touch the paper knives. A dedicated cutting unit with its own collection bin takes CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, floppy disks, credit cards and chip cards, rated O-1 T-2 E-2. That suits expired cards and retired backup discs, not classified media.

KOBRA's Energy Smart System puts the shredder into standby roughly 8 seconds after the last sheet and cuts it off from the mains completely after 4 hours idle.

SS5 or another 310 Touch Screen model?

• KOBRA 310 TS SS4: still P-2, but a narrower 3.8 mm strip, at up to 39 sheets. Choose it if you want finer strips without moving to cross cut.
• KOBRA 310 TS CC4 AO: P-4 cross cut at 3.9 x 40 mm and up to 31 sheets, with an automatic oiler. The usual choice once personal data is involved.
• KOBRA 310 TS CC2 AO: P-5, 1.9 x 15 mm particles, up to 19 sheets, also with an oiler.
• KOBRA 300.2 S5: the same 5.8 mm strip without the touch screen, with a 12.2 in throat and up to 40 sheets.

Who the SS5 is right for

It fits a team whose problem is sheer volume of routine paper: superseded print runs, internal reports, old drafts. The touch controls are easy for occasional users, and the separate disc slot is handy for odd cards and CDs. It is the wrong machine for customer, patient or employee records. P-2 strips can be pieced back together, and the bag-based bin means you will need to keep bags in stock, since KOBRA's US datasheet lists no bag part number.
