KOBRA 270 TS S5

Of the four machines built on the KOBRA 270 TS touch-screen chassis, the S5 is the one that gets through paper fastest: 30 to 32 sheets a pass in 5.8 mm strips. It buys that throughput by using the widest cut in the family, which still lands at DIN 66399 / ISO 21964 level P-2 but leaves noticeably larger fragments than the 3.8 mm S4. If the job is disposing of bulk non-sensitive paper rather than protecting data, that is a trade worth making.

Kobra publishes two sheet figures for every model in this line, one measured at 70 g/m² and one at 80 g/m², and the gap between them is wide. US 20 lb bond paper falls between the two at roughly 75 g/m², so the honest planning number for an American office is nearer 27 to 29 sheets a pass than the headline 32.

What's in the Box

The shredder head and its 29-gallon caster-mounted cabinet ship as one assembled unit, together with the power cord and the operating manual. Waste bags are not included and neither is a spare bottle of Kobra cutting-head oil; both are ordinary consumables and are worth adding to the first order so the machine is usable on day one.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Choose the S5 when the measure of success is how quickly a stack of paper disappears. Print rooms, logistics offices, schools and anywhere that generates large volumes of superseded but unremarkable documents will get the most out of it. The oil-free head, continuous-duty motor and 54 to 55 dB(A) noise level make it an easy machine to place in an open-plan area.

Do not choose it if anything you destroy is regulated. At 5.8 mm the strips are wide enough that a reasonable amount of text survives on each one, and P-2 will not satisfy a privacy or records-destruction policy. Step up to the KOBRA 270 TS C4 AO for a P-4 cross cut on the same chassis, or to the KOBRA 270 TS HS-6 AO at P-7 if you handle classified material. If you want a tidier strip without losing much speed, the KOBRA 270 TS S4 cuts 3.8 mm and gives up only two or three sheets a pass. And if the bin rather than the cutter is your bottleneck, look at the KOBRA 300.2 S4 with its 40-gallon cabinet.
