Description

The KOBRA 260 TS S5 is the fastest and least secure machine in the Touch Screen 260 cabinet. Its 5.8 mm strip knife is coarser than the 3.8 mm head on the S4, which buys it two or three more sheets a pass - up to thirty at 70 gsm - while both models sit at DIN 66399 P-2. Choose it when the paper is genuinely routine and the only thing you are optimising is how quickly a stack disappears.

Key Features

  • 5.8 mm strip knife taking 28-30 sheets a pass at 70 gsm - the highest sheet capacity of any 260 TS variant.
  • Coarse cut means low load on the head, which is why this model tolerates sustained bulk feeding better than any of its siblings.
  • Touch-screen panel for bin, jam and mode status.
  • Separate cutting unit with a 123 mm throat and its own bin for CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, chip cards and floppy disks.
  • 24-hour continuous-duty motor with automatic reverse on jam.
  • Door-open and bin-full interlocks; eight-second energy-saving standby.
  • 54-55 dB(A) in a 40 cm-wide cabinet on castors.

What's in the Box

Ships assembled on castors with the paper bin and the separate optical-media bin fitted. Waste bags are not included. Keep shredder oil available even on a strip-cut machine - Kobra excludes lubrication-related damage from its warranty terms regardless of cut type.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 260 TS S5 for a mailroom, print room, warehouse office or records purge where the volume is high and the content is not sensitive: catalogues, print overruns, superseded internal documents, packing paperwork. Nothing else in this cabinet clears paper faster.

Do not buy it for anything with a name, an account number or a diagnosis on it. A 5.8 mm strip is wide enough to read directly and P-2 is two full steps below the P-4 that commercial privacy practice expects. The 260 TS C4 AO is the same machine at P-4 with an automatic oiler, and the 260 TS C2 AO reaches P-5. Even within strip cut, the 260.1 S2 at 1.9 mm reaches P-3, which is a meaningful improvement over this. If you routinely shred 11 x 17 inch sheets, note that this 10.25-inch throat will not take them flat.

Ownership and Running Costs

This is the least expensive machine in the range to feed. The coarse knife puts little load on the motor, there is no automatic oiler to refill, and the head tolerates sustained bulk work better than any of its siblings. Waste bags are the real running cost, and you will get through them: 5.8 mm strips trap a great deal of air, so the 80-litre bin reaches its volume limit long before it reaches any sensible weight. Compressing the bag by hand between changes helps more than it ought to.

Kobra publishes different limited warranty terms for standard office models and for high-security models, and the terms have changed between product generations. We confirm the exact warranty in writing on every quote rather than printing a figure here that may not match the unit you receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the S5 and the S4?

Strip width, and that is nearly all. The S5 cuts 5.8 mm and takes 28-30 sheets at 70 gsm; the S4 cuts 3.8 mm and takes 26-28. Both are rated P-2 under DIN 66399, because the standard classifies strips up to 6 mm wide as P-2. Cabinet, motor, bin, throat, noise and 70 lb weight are identical. The S4 is the marginally more private of the two; the S5 is the marginally faster.

Can I use it for documents containing personal data?

We would advise against it. P-2 strips are directly readable and can be reassembled without specialist equipment. If your organisation handles personal data under HIPAA, GLBA, state privacy statutes or GDPR, the practical expectation is a cross-cut machine at P-4 or better. Use the S5 for bulk non-sensitive paper and route regulated documents to a 260 TS C4 AO or C2 AO.

How many sheets can it really take at once?

Kobra quotes 28-30 at 70 gsm and 23-25 at 80 gsm. US 20 lb bond is roughly 75 gsm, so 25 sheets is a fair working number. Stapled sets count as their true thickness and folded paper counts double. Feeding at the absolute maximum every time is the quickest way to blunt a strip knife, so leave a couple of sheets in reserve.

Does the bin fill quickly?

Yes - faster than on any cross-cut model in this range. Strip waste is springy and does not compact, so the 80-litre (22-gallon) bin reaches capacity by volume long before it does by weight. In heavy bulk-clearance use expect several bag changes a week. Some users compress the bag by hand between changes, which helps but is worth doing before the bin-full sensor trips.

Can it shred CDs and credit cards?

Yes, through the separate cutting unit with its own 123 mm throat and dedicated bin, rated O-1 for optical media. Do not put discs or cards into the paper throat - the strip knives are not designed for rigid plastic and the fragments contaminate paper waste that would otherwise be recyclable. Hard drives are outside the scope of any paper shredder.
