Description

The KOBRA 260.1 S2 is the strip-cut shredder that reaches DIN 66399 P-3, and it gets there because the knife is 1.9 mm wide - just inside the 2 mm maximum the standard allows for a P-3 strip. That single number is what separates it from every other strip-cut machine in the Kobra range, all of which cut 3.8 mm or wider and land at P-2. It is also oil-free, which removes the routine maintenance that catches out most office shredders.

Key Features

  • 1.9 mm strip cut rated P-3 | T-3 | E-2 - a genuine security level above the 3.8 mm and 5.8 mm strip machines it sits alongside.
  • Oil-free cutting system. There is no lubrication schedule to keep, no oil bottle to reorder and no warranty exposure from someone forgetting.
  • 12-16 sheets a pass despite the fine strip, from a 4/5 HP motor rated for 24-hour continuous duty.
  • Carbon-hardened knives that tolerate staples and the occasional paper clip.
  • Compact 84 cm-tall cabinet on castors with a 60-litre bin - the smallest footprint in this batch.
  • Automatic start/stop, automatic reverse on jam, door-open and bin-full safety stops.
  • Energy-smart standby that drops power draw after a short idle period.

What's in the Box

Delivered assembled on its castored cabinet with the 60-litre bin fitted. Disposable waste bags are not included. Unlike the cross-cut and high-security models in the Kobra range, there is no oil to order for this machine - the cutting system is designed to run dry.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 260.1 S2 for a small office, clinic reception or professional practice that wants better than a basic strip shredder without taking on the maintenance of a micro-cut head. It is compact, it is quiet at 55 dB(A), it is the lightest machine in this batch at 62 lb, and the oil-free head means it will still be working in three years even if nobody ever services it.

Do not buy it if a written policy names P-4 or higher, which is common practice for personal and client data - P-3 strips are finer than most but they are still strips, and the 260 TS C4 AO at 3.9 x 40 mm is the right machine for that. Do not buy it if you need to destroy CDs or DVDs; Kobra rates this model for paper and cards only, and the 260.1 S4 or the Touch Screen models handle optical media. And if throughput matters more than the extra DIN step, the 260.1 S4 takes 22-24 sheets at 80 gsm on an 80-litre bin for a similar outlay.

Ownership and Running Costs

With no oil to buy, waste bags are the only consumable this machine needs, which makes it the least expensive unit in this batch to keep running over a five-year life.

Kobra publishes different limited warranty terms for standard office models and for high-security models, and the terms have changed between product generations. We confirm the exact warranty in writing on every quote rather than printing a figure here that may not match the unit you receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this P-3 when other strip-cut shredders are P-2?

Because of the strip width. DIN 66399 allows a strip up to 6 mm wide to be classed P-2, but P-3 requires 2 mm or less. The 260.1 S2 cuts at 1.9 mm, which just clears it. The 260.1 S4, 260 TS S4 and 260 TS S5 all cut 3.8 mm or 5.8 mm and are therefore P-2. It is a real difference in how readable the output is, not a marketing distinction.

Does it really never need oiling?

Correct - Kobra specifies an oil-free cutting system for this model, so there is no lubrication schedule and no oil to buy. That is unusual and genuinely useful on a shared machine. It does not mean maintenance-free: keep paper clips out, empty the bin before it packs solid, and clear the throat of dust occasionally. But the single most commonly neglected task on an office shredder does not apply here.

Can it shred CDs, DVDs or old floppy disks?

No. Kobra rates the 260.1 S2 for paper, credit cards and chip cards only. There is no separate optical-media cutting unit on this model, and feeding a disc into the paper throat will damage the strip knives. If you need optical media destruction, the 260.1 S4 and every 260 TS model include a dedicated cutting unit with its own bin.

How often will the 60-litre bin need emptying?

The bin is the smallest in this batch at 16 gallons, and strip waste does not compact, so it fills faster than the number suggests. For a two- or three-person office producing a few hundred pages a week, expect a change every week or two. Heavier use will be more frequent. The bin-full sensor stops the cutters, so the machine will tell you before it chokes.

Will legal-size paper go through?

Yes. The 260 mm (10.25 inch) throat takes US legal at 8.5 inches wide easily and imposes no limit on sheet length. Tabloid at 11 x 17 inch is too wide and must be folded, which counts as two sheets against the 12-16 sheet capacity. A4 at 210 mm and letter at 216 mm both feed with plenty of clearance.

Is 62 lb light enough to move between rooms?

It is the lightest and shortest machine in this group - 62 lb in a 16 x 14.2 x 33 inch cabinet on castors - so one person can roll it across a level floor without difficulty. Lifting it over a threshold or into a vehicle is a two-person job. If it needs to go upstairs on delivery, say so when you order.
