The intimus 120 CP5 (part number 227174S1) is a floor-standing departmental shredder that cuts paper into 1.9 x 15 mm (about 1/16 x 9/16 in) particles, which places it at security level P-5 under DIN 66399. It takes up to 15 sheets per pass through a 12.2 in (310 mm) throat and collects waste in a 120-liter cabinet bin. It is meant for a department whose disposal policy specifically requires P-5 rather than the more common P-4.

What the P-5 rating buys you on this chassis

DIN 66399 allows a P-5 particle to be no larger than 30 mm². At 28.5 mm² the 120 CP5 sits just under that limit, and its particle is around a fifth the size of the 3.8 x 36 mm piece cut by the 120 CP4 built on the same frame. intimus certifies the head across several media classes as well: P-5 for paper, O-4 for optical discs, T-5 for magnetic cards, E-4 for electronic media and F-2 for film.

The cost is throughput. intimus North America rates this model at up to 455 sheets per minute, against 680 for the CP4, and a finer particle fills the 120-liter bin sooner for the same amount of paper. If nobody has asked you for P-5, you are paying in speed for protection you do not need.

Day-to-day handling in a shared department

The i-Control switch starts the cutters when it detects paper, stops them afterward and puts the machine to sleep between users. A dynamic load indicator on the front panel shows how much of the head's capacity a stack is using, which teaches people to feed sensible amounts, and the automatic reverse backs out a stack that is too thick. The sealed cabinet keeps cutter noise down to 57 dB(A) at idle. At 99 lb (45 kg) on castors, one person can roll it across a level floor; stairs need two people.

Plan for two consumables. Waste bags are not supplied. Cutting-cylinder oil matters too: the intimus North America warranty makes lubrication per the operator's manual a condition of cover.

Is the 120 CP5 the right fit?

It suits a department that has to meet a written P-5 requirement, shares one machine between several people and wants a large bin it can roll to where the files are. Look elsewhere if ordinary confidential paper is all you destroy, since the 120 CP4 will be quicker, or if you need classified destruction, which calls for a P-7 model such as the 120 CP7.
