Description

The Dahle 20434DS exists for one reason: to put NSA-listed destruction where the shredder has to travel. It is a P-7 machine cutting to 1 mm x 4.7 mm, built into a foam-lined high-impact hard case, weighing 66 lb complete and measuring 16 x 14 x 18 inches. Everything else about it is a compromise made in service of that - four sheets a pass and a 6-gallon bin - and if you do not need to move the machine, those compromises buy you nothing.

Key Features

  • NSA/CSS 02-01 listed. 'Dahle 20434 DS' appears on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders under Dahle North America, Inc., with a throughput rating of Low. It is the listing, not the DIN class, that satisfies an accreditation requirement.
  • Genuinely transportable. 66 lb all-in, in a foam-padded high-impact plastic case sized 16 x 14 x 18 inches. It can go in a vehicle, on a pallet or as checked freight and be operating again within minutes.
  • P-7 particle at 4.7 mm2. 1 mm x 4.7 mm output - inside DIN 66399's 5 mm2 P-7 ceiling and inside the 1 mm x 5 mm limit NSA/CSS 02-01 sets.
  • 9.5-inch feed opening. Letter-size documents feed without folding, which is not a given on a case-sized machine.
  • Automatic jam protection. Overfeed detection with reverse. Worth having on a four-sheet machine, where it is easy to over-insert.
  • Quiet at 50 dB. Low enough to run in a shared or temporary workspace without dominating it.

Dahle does not publish motor wattage, current draw or a rated continuous duty cycle for this model, so those figures are deliberately omitted rather than estimated.

What's in the Box

The 20434DS ships as the shredder in its foam-lined high-impact plastic transport case with the power cord. Dahle does not publish a fuller packing list. Shred bags are not included, and the 6-gallon bin sits below the range of Dahle's smallest catalogued shred bag (20723, rated for 8-10 gallon shredders), so confirm the correct liner with Dahle or your dealer rather than assuming. There is no automatic oiler on this model.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 20434DS if the requirement is mobile or forward-deployed destruction of classified material - field offices, temporary secure facilities, travelling audit or investigation teams, embassy and military use. Within that narrow brief nothing else in Dahle's range comes close: it is EPL-listed and it fits in a case.

Do not buy it as a general office shredder. Four sheets of #20 bond per pass and a 6-gallon bin make it painfully slow for routine volume, and the NSA list itself rates its throughput Low. If the machine will live in one room, the Dahle 40334 gives you the same 1 x 4.7 mm particle and EPL listing with a 23-gallon bin, and the Dahle 40434 does it with 30 gallons and eight sheets a pass. It also takes paper only - no cards, no discs, no staples - and its cutting cylinders carry a one-year warranty rather than the lifetime cover on Dahle's lower-security models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 20434DS genuinely NSA approved?

Yes. 'Dahle 20434 DS' is named on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders under Dahle North America, Inc., and was still listed in the April 2026 quarterly update, with a throughput rating of Low. That listing is the requirement - NSA/CSS 02-01 asks for a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and for the specific model to appear on the EPL. Its 1 x 4.7 mm cut meets the particle limit.

How portable is it really?

It weighs 66 lb complete and the case measures 16 x 14 x 18 inches. That is a genuine two-person lift or a one-person lift with a hand truck - it is transportable rather than luggable. The case is high-impact plastic with foam padding, designed to protect the cutting head in transit. It still needs 115 V mains power at the destination; there is no battery option.

Only four sheets a pass? Is that right?

Yes - four sheets of #20 bond, six of #16. That is the price of a 4.7 mm2 particle in a machine this size, and the NSA's own list rates its throughput Low. If you are destroying more than a modest daily volume you will find it slow. Plan around it: the 20434DS is for destroying sensitive material where you are, not for clearing archives.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards or stapled documents?

No. It is rated for paper only. The 1 x 4.7 mm cutting cylinders are precision-milled and metal or rigid plastic will damage them, which on a deployed machine means a mission-critical failure a long way from support. Remove staples, clips and fasteners before feeding, and destroy optical media and cards by another approved method.

What bags does the 6-gallon bin take?

Dahle's published shred-bag range starts at part 20723, which is rated for 8-10 gallon shredders, so the 20434DS's 6-gallon bin sits below the smallest catalogued size. We have not been able to verify a Dahle part number specified for this bin, so rather than guess: confirm the correct liner with Dahle or your dealer. In deployed use the bag is usually treated as classified waste and sealed before removal anyway.

Does it need oiling?

The 20434DS does not have the automatic EvenFlow Lubricator fitted to Dahle's cabinet models, so lubrication is a manual maintenance task. Follow the interval and method in the machine's own manual and use Dahle shredder oil (part 20721 or 20722) rather than any general-purpose lubricant. A P-7 cutting head runs hot and tight; skipping lubrication is the fastest way to shorten its life.
