Description

This is ACCO's own shredder lubricant, part number 1760049, supplied in a 16 oz (473 ml) bottle. Oil is not an optional extra on a shredder: it reduces the torque the cutters have to overcome, which lowers the chance of a jam and materially extends cutter life. An unoiled machine will start refusing sheet counts it managed easily when new.

ACCO states that this oil is suitable for all GBC shredders as well as shredders made by other manufacturers, so it is the general-purpose bottle rather than a model-specific one.

Compatible Models

ACCO specifies this oil for its whole shredder line, and there are two different ways to apply it depending on the machine:

  • Conventional shredders — the GBC ShredMaster range, the Momentum range and Swingline office machines. Pour a few streaks of oil across a sheet of paper and run that sheet through the shredder.
  • GBC Jam Free and Stack-and-Shred models, including the AutoFeed+ cabinets — pour the oil directly into the shredder's designated oil reservoir rather than onto a sheet.
  • GBC commercial cabinets including the CX22-44 and CX34-44, whose operating manual specifies this part number by name rather than a generic lubricant.
  • Other manufacturers' shredders — ACCO states general compatibility, though if your machine is under warranty it is worth checking whether its own maker requires a branded oil.

One exception worth knowing: shredders fitted with an automatic SelfOil system take the 1 litre bottle, ACCO part 1753190, which is designed to sit in the machine's reservoir. Use that rather than this one on a SelfOil machine.

Reordering

How often you reorder depends entirely on duty. A home office machine used a few minutes a week will get through a bottle over a year or more; a departmental cabinet oiled every time the bin is emptied will move considerably faster. The practical rule is to oil at every bin change and buy a spare bottle before the current one is empty, because the day the shredder starts jamming is not the day you want to be waiting on a delivery.

Do not substitute an aerosol lubricant, a household oil or a penetrating spray. Aerosols in particular are a fire risk in a shredder and can damage the plastic components, and using one is grounds for a warranty claim being refused. If you have a SelfOil machine, order part 1753190 instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which shredders does this oil fit?

ACCO states that it suits all GBC shredders and shredders from other manufacturers too. It is specifically named in the operating manual for GBC's CX22-44 and CX34-44 commercial cabinets. The one case where you want a different product is a machine with an automatic SelfOil reservoir, which takes the 1 litre bottle, part 1753190.

How do I apply it?

On a conventional shredder, pour a few streaks across a sheet of paper and run that sheet through. On GBC's Jam Free and Stack-and-Shred models, including the AutoFeed+ cabinets, pour it into the machine's designated oil reservoir instead. Check your operating manual if you are unsure which type you have; pouring oil into a machine with no reservoir makes a mess that is tedious to clean.

How often should I oil the shredder?

As a working rule, every time you empty the waste bin. Machines with fine cutting heads — micro-cut and high-security models — generate more paper dust and benefit from more frequent oiling than coarse cross-cut machines. Some high-security shredders specify oiling every 15 to 30 minutes of continuous use.

Can I use a general purpose oil instead?

No, and it is a false economy. Household and penetrating oils are the wrong viscosity and can attack the plastics inside the machine. Aerosol lubricants are worse: the propellant is flammable and a shredder generates heat and paper dust. Using either is usually enough for a manufacturer to decline a warranty claim.

How long does one bottle last?

There is no honest single answer, because it depends on duty. A personal shredder oiled monthly will take a long time to empty 473 ml; a departmental machine oiled at every bin change may use it in a few months. Order a replacement before the bottle runs out rather than after.
