GBC ShredMaster Home Office Shredder, SM15-08, Cross-Cut Shredder, 15 Sheets

The GBC ShredMaster SM15-08 is ACCO's fine-cut home office shredder, cutting 15 sheets of 20 lb paper per pass into 1/8 x 1/2 in (approx. 3.2 x 12.7 mm) particles, about 40 mm² each. ACCO advertises it as P-5, but that geometry falls in DIN 66399 P-4, so it is best viewed as an unusually fine P-4 machine for a home office or small team that shreds personal and financial records regularly.

The P-5 question: what the numbers say

For P-5, DIN 66399 requires a particle no larger than 30 mm² and no wider than 2 mm. ACCO publishes the SM15-08 cut as 1/8 by 1/2 inch, which works out to roughly 3.2 mm wide and around 40 mm² in area. Both figures exceed the P-5 limits, which places the head in P-4. We list it on that basis.

For everyday use this barely matters: the shred is about a quarter the size of the standard ShredMaster cross-cut and visibly finer in the bin. It matters a great deal for procurement. If a contract, insurer or auditor requires P-5 in writing, this model will not pass a check against its own published cut size.

Living with the SM15-08 day to day

Touch controls with LED warnings report bin full, door open, overheat and overload, so you know why the machine has stopped. Auto-reverse backs out an overfed stack, and Eco Power Save turns the shredder off after two minutes without use. The four-hour run rating means the motor rarely ends a session; emptying the 8-gallon bin is the usual interruption. Fine heads generate more paper dust than coarse ones, so oil the cutters with ACCO shredder oil, part 1760049, each time you empty the bin.

• Momentum M12-12: a verified P-5 particle of approx. 1.98 x 15.08 mm, just under 30 mm², with 12 sheets per pass and a 12-gallon bin.

Who should buy the SM15-08

Buy it if you want the smallest particle in the personal ShredMaster line, run long sessions and do not need to prove P-5 compliance on paper. Bank statements, tax papers and patient or client records end up as fine confetti, and the quiet operation lets it sit in a shared room.

Skip it if a policy names P-5 or micro-cut in the DIN sense, if more than a handful of people will feed it, or if credit cards and discs are part of what you destroy.
