How SelfOil works and why it uses a liter bottle

On a conventional shredder someone has to remember to run an oiled sheet through the cutters, and on shared machines that step is often skipped. A SelfOil shredder removes it: oil sits in a reservoir inside the machine, and the shredder lubricates the cutters on its own as it needs to. Because it doses oil steadily during normal use, it consumes more than a hand-oiled machine, which is why ACCO supplies this oil in a liter bottle rather than a small applicator.

ACCO does not publish a list of individual models for this part. The deciding question is whether your shredder has a SelfOil reservoir:

• It has an oil filler and lubricates itself: this bottle is correct.
• You oil it by feeding an oiled sheet: buy the 16 oz bottle, part 1760049, which is easier to pour in small amounts.

Keeping a SelfOil machine supplied

The shredder signals when its reservoir runs low, and how quickly that happens depends on how long it runs each day. A cabinet in heavy daily use will empty a liter far sooner than one used briefly. Running short is easy to miss, because a dry reservoir shows up only later as struggling cutters, so it pays to keep a spare bottle on the shelf.

Fill the reservoir only with oil intended for it. Aerosol lubricants, household oils and penetrating sprays have the wrong viscosity, can clog the delivery path and may damage the machine.
