Dahle PowerTEC 828 HD Hard Drive/Paper Shredder

The Dahle PowerTEC 828 HD is the machine you buy when a decommissioning project produces both hard drives and boxes of paper and you do not want two queues. An 11.8-inch paper throat takes 100 sheets a pass, and a separate 4.7-inch drive feed shreds 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives to 40 x 40-90 mm fragments at DIN class H-4 - actual shredding, not deformation, so the platters are cut apart rather than bent. It is a serious installation: 1,257 lb, 4.5 HP, and a 220 V three-phase supply. Treat it as plant, not office equipment.

Before you specify the 828 HD, settle the installation questions, because they are the ones that delay projects. It needs a 220 V three-phase supply commissioned in advance, a delivery route and floor that will take 1,257 lb, and clearance in front of two feeds plus room to roll two bins out. Running costs are lubricant for the automatic oiler and cutting cylinders as a wear item, warranted for one year. In exchange you get a single machine and a single queue for two waste streams that most organisations otherwise handle with two machines or an outside service.

Delivered as a single 1,257 lb cabinet with both cutting heads, both roll-out bins and the automatic lubricator fitted. Waste bags are not included and no bag part number is published. You will need a loading dock or a liftgate, a clear path with a floor rated for the weight, and a 220 V three-phase supply installed before delivery. Budget for lubricant as an ongoing consumable.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 828 HD if you run an IT asset disposal operation or a records centre that clears drives and paper together, you already have three-phase power, and you would rather own the process than ship media to a bureau. Nothing else in this range does both jobs at this throughput.

Do not buy it if you only destroy drives - the 818 HD punch does that on a 115 V outlet at 154 lb and is NSA listed. Do not buy it if you only destroy paper: the 909 HS is lighter, quieter to install and gives you 85 sheets a pass at the same P-3 class with a 17.5-inch throat. And do not buy it if your security policy requires P-4 or tighter for paper, because P-3 is a commercially confidential class, not a high security one.
