Dahle PowerTEC 747 CS Paper/Optical Media Shredder

The Dahle PowerTEC 747 CS is the only shredder in this family whose NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List entry reads, in NSA's own words, 'Device Sanitizes CDs, DVD, BD'. That single line is the reason to specify it over the otherwise similar 727 CS: Blu-ray and DVD destruction requires fragments of 2 mm or less, and the 747 CS cuts optical media below 2 x 2 mm at DIN class O-6 while still delivering a P-7, 1 x 5 mm paper cut through a separate 9-inch throat. At 530 lb it is the heaviest machine in the PowerTEC 700 range, and the extra mass is where the finer optical head lives.

Installation deserves a moment's planning. At 530 lb the 747 CS is nearly 200 lb heavier than the 727 CS, so confirm dock or liftgate access and a route that will take a 32-inch-wide cabinet before it ships. Once in place it runs from an ordinary 115 V outlet like the rest of the PowerTEC 700 range. Ongoing costs are lubricant for the EvenFlow Lubricator and, in time, cutting cylinders - warranted for one year, against two years on the machine as a whole. Budget for cylinders as a wear part rather than a fault, particularly if Blu-ray volume is high.

Ships as one steel cabinet on casters with both cutting heads, both bins and the automatic lubricator installed. Waste bags are not supplied and no bag part number is published for this model. Lubricant is a consumable you will reorder. Given the 530 lb shipping weight, confirm dock or liftgate access before delivery.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 747 CS if your destruction policy names Blu-ray or DVD, or if you would simply rather not have to argue about which disc formats your machine is cleared for. Its EPL entry covers all three optical formats plus P-7 paper, which makes an auditor's job short.

Do not buy it if CDs are the only optical format you handle. The 727 CS is lighter at 330 lb, quieter at 55 dB, faster at 24 ft/min, has a larger 53-gallon total waste capacity and costs less, and its EPL listing covers CD destruction. Buying the 747 CS for CD-only work is paying for an optical head you will never need. If you shred no discs at all, the 707 PS gives the same P-7 paper cut through a 16-inch throat.
