Dahle PowerTEC 717 OS High Security Optical Media Shredder

The Dahle PowerTEC 717 OS does one job: it destroys optical discs. It is not a paper shredder with a disc slot bolted on - the whole 165 lb cabinet, the 5-inch feed and the 20-gallon bin exist to turn CDs and DVDs into 2 x 4 mm fragments at DIN 66399 level O-5. That single-purpose design is the reason to buy it. In a media destruction room where paper is already handled by another machine, the 717 OS keeps disc waste in its own stream and its own bin, which is exactly what a chain-of-custody log wants.

Siting the 717 OS is straightforward. It runs on a standard 115 V outlet, occupies a footprint under two feet square, and weighs 165 lb on casters, so it can be moved into a secure area and rolled out again for servicing. The ongoing cost is lubricant for the automatic oiler; there are no consumable blades or cartridges. Because discs are considerably more abrasive than paper, cutting cylinder life on any optical shredder depends heavily on keeping the lubricator filled, and Dahle warrants the cylinders for one year against two years on the machine.

• Automatic jam protection and self-cleaning mode. The controller cycles forward and reverse to clear an overload, and a self-cleaning routine clears fragments from the head.
• Bin-full auto-off and safety door sensors. The machine stops when the bin fills and when the cabinet door is opened, and rubber shock mounts damp the vibration a disc shredder generates.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 717 OS if optical media is a distinct, regular waste stream for you and you want it destroyed on its own machine with its own bin - a media library, an imaging department, a government records office that already has a paper shredder it trusts.

Do not buy it if you need one machine for both paper and discs. Feeding paper into the 717 OS is not what it is built for. The 727 CS gives you a P-7 paper throat and a separate O-5 optical slot in one cabinet, and the 747 CS cuts optical media finer at O-6. If Blu-ray discs are in scope, look at the 747 CS instead: NSA's paper shredder EPL specifically records the 747 CS as sanitizing CDs, DVDs and BD, and the 717 OS carries no such entry.
