Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 717 OS on the NSA Evaluated Products List?
Dahle markets the 717 OS as NSA/CSS 04-02 approved for top-secret optical media destruction. We could not confirm the 717 OS by name on the NSA/CSS EPL revisions we reviewed - the Dahle model recorded there for optical destruction was the 727 CS, for CDs. If an EPL listing is a hard requirement for your programme, verify the current quarterly revision at nsa.gov before you order, or specify the 727 CS or 747 CS, both of which we did confirm on the EPL.
Can I shred paper in it?
No. The 717 OS is an optical media shredder and Dahle lists CDs and DVDs as its accepted materials. There is no published paper sheet capacity for it and the 5-inch feed is sized for discs. If you need both, the 727 CS combines a 9-inch P-7 paper throat with a separate 5-inch optical feed in a single cabinet.
Will it destroy Blu-ray discs?
Dahle lists CDs and DVDs for this model, not Blu-ray. Blu-ray has a much denser data layer and destruction standards for it are correspondingly stricter - NSA requires 2 mm or less for DVD and Blu-ray against 5 mm or less for CD. The 717 OS cuts at 2 x 4 mm. If Blu-ray is in scope, specify the 747 CS, which Dahle rates at O-6 with a shred size under 2 x 2 mm.
How many discs can it take at a time?
Dahle does not publish a discs-per-pass figure for the 717 OS, so we will not quote one. What we can tell you is that the feed is 5 inches wide, the motor is a 2 HP continuous-duty gear drive, and automatic jam protection cycles the head if you overload it. Feed discs steadily rather than in thick handfuls and the machine will keep up without tripping.
How often does the bin need emptying?
The bin holds 20 gallons. Disc fragments are hard, light and do not settle the way paper does, so the bin reads as full sooner than its volume suggests. Bin-full auto-off stops the machine rather than letting it pack solid, so you will get a clear signal. For a department destroying a few dozen discs a week, expect to empty it monthly rather than weekly.
Does it need to be oiled manually?
No. The automatic EvenFlow Lubricator® meters oil across the cutting cylinders continuously while the machine runs. Your only task is refilling the reservoir with lubricant, which is a consumable and not included in the machine price. Optical media is abrasive on cutting cylinders, so do not let it run dry.
