An auto-feed shredder has a lidded tray that holds a stack of paper and works through it on its own. You load it, close the lid, and walk away. For offices where shredding is a task people avoid, this is usually the feature that gets it done.

Auto-feed machines quote two capacity figures, and they are not interchangeable. The tray capacity — 150, 300, 550, 600 or 750 sheets depending on model — describes unattended throughput. The manual-slot capacity, typically 8 to 10 sheets, is what you get when you feed by hand for stapled or folded documents that the tray will not take. Both numbers belong in the comparison.
