Which you need depends on whether your problem is the space empties occupy on site, or the cost of moving them off it.

Crushing and baling are two different jobs
A crusher deforms containers so they stop being mostly air. Output is loose crushed material collected in a container on the machine. It solves an on-site storage problem: a deposit-return counter, a stadium concourse, a hotel back-of-house, a canteen.
A baler compresses loose material into a dense, strapped, stackable block. Output is a discrete unit you can palletise, weigh and sell or send for recycling. It solves a transport and commercial problem.
A crusher-baler combination does both in one pass. A barrel press is a different machine again — it crushes steel and light-metal drums rather than beverage containers, and is a waste-management rather than a recycling-revenue machine.
The mistake worth avoiding is buying a baler when your constraint is counter space, or a crusher when your constraint is haulage cost. They are not interchangeable.
What the volume reduction ratios actually mean
Manufacturers state reduction in two different ways, and the two are easy to confuse.

Note the wording difference. "Reduced to 25–30%" and "reduced by up to 90%" are not the same construction. The first is a residual, the second is a saving. Reading one as the other will make a crusher look four times better than it is, or a baler look four times worse. When you receive a quotation, confirm which construction the supplier is using before you build a business case on it.
Also treat "up to" as what it says. A 90% figure is achieved on the material the machine was designed around, cleanly fed. Mixed, contaminated or rigid material will not reach it.

Note on the 1049 SA throughput: HSM's product page is internally inconsistent. The descriptive copy states "up to 2400 PET bottles (1 litre)" per hour, while the technical data table on the same page lists 2,000 per hour. What to look for
How throughput is stated
Beverage-container throughput is always quoted against a specific container. HSM's figures are for one-litre PET bottles. Half-litre bottles, aluminium cans and multi-litre containers will not run at the same rate, and no manufacturer publishes a rate for every format. If your mix is predominantly cans or small bottles, ask for the rate for your actual mix rather than assuming the headline number transfers.
Ceiling height, not floor space
This is the single most common installation failure in this category. The FP 3000 barrel press is 113.86 in tall — that is nearly 9 ft 6 in before you allow any clearance for loading or service access. Its floor footprint, by contrast, is modest at 45.98 by 37.8 in. A room that easily accommodates the plan area may not accommodate the machine at all.
The corollary matters too: the CP 4988 is 150.63 in long, over 12 ft, which is a corridor and door-width problem during delivery as much as a floor-space problem afterwards.
Loading height and operator ergonomics
Loading heights vary considerably: 43.0 in on the FP 3000, 47.5 in on the 1049 SA, 59.4 in on the CP 4988. Nearly five feet is a genuine reach if your operators are lifting full sacks of empties repeatedly through a shift. Where the loading height is high, ask whether an automatic filling option is available — HSM offers both manual and automatic filling on the CP 4988 — because otherwise you have solved a volume problem by creating a manual-handling one.
Residual liquid
Anything that crushes returned empties or used barrels will release liquid. The FP 3000 is specified with a collector tray for residual liquid and a press ram with spikes to open barrels; it is enclosed on all sides with an inspection window. Check for equivalent provision on any machine you are comparing, and check where the tray drains to. A machine with no liquid management will make the floor around it a hazard within a week.
Consumables
Balers consume strapping. HSM specifies a 3-fold continuous polyester strap on the CP 4988. This is a recurring cost a crusher does not have, and it should be in the running-cost comparison rather than discovered afterwards. Strapping and wire is a category worth pricing before you commit.
Power supply
The gap here is wide. The 1049 SA runs on 110 V single phase — a standard outlet. The CP 4988 and FP 3000 both require 480 V. That is not a detail; it is often the deciding constraint, and it should be confirmed with facilities before a shortlist is drawn up rather than after.
Matching the machine to the operation
- Deposit-return point, retail back-office, canteen, small venue — a crusher. The 1049 SA runs on a normal 110 V supply, weighs 526 lb and holds 76.6 gallons of crushed output. It solves the counter-space problem without a facilities project.
- Stadium, large venue, bottler, distribution centre — a crusher-baler combination. The CP 4988 doubles the hourly rate to 4,000 one-litre bottles and turns the output into 220 lb bales you can palletise and sell rather than loose material you have to store.

Where these machines disappoint
Throughput figures assume clean, single-format feed. Real deposit-return streams contain caps, labels, part-full bottles, the occasional glass bottle and material that is not what the machine was designed for. Rates in service are generally below the published maximum, and no manufacturer publishes a de-rated figure for mixed input.
Reduction ratios do not compound with your existing process. If your empties are already being trodden down or bagged tightly, the incremental gain from a crusher is smaller than the headline ratio implies, because part of that reduction has already been captured manually.
The commercial case depends on your offtake contract, not on the machine. A baler produces a saleable commodity only if someone in your region buys baled PET or aluminium at a price that justifies it. That is a local question, and it is worth answering before rather than after the capital request.
